In the modern world, many childhood diseases like childhood obesity are on a rise at an alarming rate. Though attributable to many factors, one major factor deteriorating the health of our children is the widespread consumption of junk food. Consuming these types of food can have serious consequences for the well-being of children.
What exactly is junk food?
Junk food is a broad term consisting of food items that are high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats, but very low in nutrients. Examples may include chips, soda, and fast food. Unfortunately, junk food is becoming increasingly prevalent in our society, and it is having a significant impact on the health of our children. In this article, we aim to discuss the impact it is having on the quality of life of our younger generation.

As junk food items are very poor sources of macro and micronutrients it can also lead to nutritional deficiencies.
Another negative impact of junk food, which is often overlooked by many, is it's detrimental effect on the mental health. Many peer reviewed Studies have shown that children who consume junk food on a regular basis are more likely to suffer from mental health disorders including depression and anxiety. As to why that may be, the exact cause isn't fully understood but it is believed to be due to the fact that junk food, being high in simple carbohydrates, can cause mood swings and affect the brain's ability to regulate emotions.
Junk food can also have an effect on a child's academic performance. Consuming it regularly has shown to cause fatigue, decreased concentration, and lower energy levels, making it difficult for children to stay focused and perform well in school. Furthermore, the high sugar and caffeine can cause hyperactivity and disrupt a child's ability to sleep, leading to poor sleep hygiene and further impacting the child's mental health.
How to prevent junk food ruining our children's health?
In order to prevent the negative effects of junk food on children, parents and teachers have the most important role to play. It is extremely important to know when to say no to a child. Parents need to encourage healthy eating habits from an early age. This includes teaching children about the importance of a healthy balanced diet consisting of items like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as restricting their intake of processed and high-calorie junk foods strictly.
Parents also need to set a good example as they are the role model the kids follow. This can be done by making healthy dietary and lifestyle choices for yourself and normalizing them in the child's mind. Another method that have shown to help involves children in meal planning and preparation, which can not only help them develop a healthy relationship with food but also work to strengthen family bonds.
Parents also need to limit the children's exposure to junk food. This can be achieved by not stocking junk food in the house, or choosing not to eat at fast food restaurants and convenience stores. Instead, they need to opt for healthier options like cooking at home, encouraging their children to take a packed lunch to school or work, or choosing restaurants that offer healthier options.
